From The PD, and Cleveland.com:
Here are the broad outlines of the programs that FirstEnergy will offer consumers after the state approves the concepts.
- An appliance "turn-in" program, paying customers $50 to allow the utility to come out to the home and pick up old refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners for recycling. The pickup may also include a discount coupon to buy a new appliance.
- A deep discount on a comprehensive home energy audit that would involve an in-house evaluation by experts on everything from appliances to furnaces to insulation to air leaks around windows and doors. The company would pay about 70 percent of the cost -- and give consumers rebates or discount coupons to buy new equipment.
- Discounts on the purchases of federal EnergyStar certified appliances and high-efficiency lighting systems. The size of the discounts has not been set.
- Special thermostats that will allow the company to turn down your home AC a couple of degrees during hot summer days when demand for power peaks and sometimes cannot be easily met. This program has been in place on an experimental basis for a couple of years.
- Rebates and other incentives to home builders to encourage them to improve the energy performance of new homes to meet federal EnergyStar standards.
