COSE's "I Buy NEO" program is a local version of a grassroots movement in cities and small towns across America that has been gaining momentum for more than a decade. Merchants and consumers from Maui to Rockland, Maine, have banded together to promote local merchants and preserve what makes their communities unique.
"Numerous studies have demonstrated that dollars spent at independent, locally owned businesses generate more than three times as much direct return to the local economy as dollars spent at chains or other absentee-owned businesses," said Jeff Milchen, co-founder of the American Independent Business Alliance in Bozeman, Mont., a national hub for such efforts around the country.
