Since this blog is all about business in Northeast Ohio, and since Northeast Ohio has a plethora of job seekers, currently, I think it's time to spell out what our area's job market is really like, and what the hot jobs are.
I went to a long-time Northeast Ohio executive recruiter to get the facts. Rick Taylor, the President of Ratliff Taylor, a Cleveland area executive search and career transition firm, is a "tell it like it is" kind of guy-like this blogger. Here is Rick's take on the current job market, the prospects for NEO, and some great suggestions for job seekers. Please make sure every unemployed middle manager or executive that you know, in and out of Ohio, reads this.
1. You have been an executive recruiter in NEO for years. You have been through a couple of recessions. What’s different this time around?
It’s longer and deeper than I have seen in my 35+ years in this business. The need to fill positions is still there as companies try to survive, but they are putting them on hold for the time being.
2. What are you seeing in terms of companies that are reaching out to you to find talent. ARE they looking for new employees right now, or are they in the wait and see mode?
As mentioned above the needs are still there, but everyone is afraid how long this will last. When this starts to turn around and people are feeling better, we are going to have a real wave of hiring. It WILL happen. We just don’t know when.
3. What are two really important things that job seekers in NEO should be doing to secure a position?
A. Networking, networking, networking. Get to know people now, so when this does break you will be remembered.
B. Keep in touch. Let the people know you are still available, even if it is just a short e-mail reminder.
4. How does the activity in NEO compare to other regions of the country, job opening wise?
Believe it or not. I believe it is worse in other parts of the country. I think we have some pretty conservative firms here and they are very wise in their planning and strategic approach to this dilemma. We have been here before. We still have to run our companies and look to the future.
5. What industries should this year’s college graduates be looking at?
Health Care, Bio Tech, High Technology, Environment (sustainability) and the food industry.
Thank you, Rick!
